Welsh Lovespoons

A collection of traditional wooden and pewter Welsh Lovespoons, crafted with symbols of different meanings.

Lovespoons were originally a tradition unique to Wales that originated in the 17th century. They were a gift item between lovers that were lovingly carved and decorated with symbols of various meanings, for example a heart would indicate love for the other person, a horseshoe would indicate good fortune, and a diamond would indicate wealth. It is widely believed that lovespoons originated from sailors carving them during long journeys, which is explained by early lovespoons being decorated with nautical symbols such as anchors.

Nowadays lovespoons are more than a gift between lovers, as they are also a popular decorative item given as gestures of friendship, wedding gifts or as a reminder of travels to Wales. Some now come with symbols that signify Wales and Welsh culture such as the Welsh Dragon, Daffodil or Celtic symbols. Lovespoons can also be professionally laser engraved with customisable imagery or wording to celebrate a special event or occasion.
