Welsh Slate
Slate products mined locally in North Wales, ready for personalisation with an engraved message or image.
As Wales is the major region for slate in the United Kingdom, it is also home to a rich history when it comes to slate mining. This history goes as far back as the roman period, where slate was mined and used in the fort at Caernarfon. While the slate industry in North Wales is not as big as it used to be due to declines from WWI, WWII and the great depression; slate is still being produced at a reduced scale to this day.
Over the last approx. 200 years, the transformation of the valleys in the Snowdon massif contributed significantly to the history of Welsh mining, and even the world as local quarries were used as models for other parts of the world alongside exports of skilled workers and technology. The slate industry and landscape in North Wales was so prominent that it has resulted in UNESCO awarding the iconic landscape the status of a World Heritage Site.
